| Additional Information: The Airedale Terrier is the largest breed in the terrier group, it is a medium sized dog with a stiff and wiry outer coat which lays close to the skin but the undercoat is shorter and softer. Skin irritations are a problem with Airedales so daily brushing is required to lessen the chance of these occurring. Airedales have most terrier characteristics, they are courageous, adaptable, friendly and good with children and will want to be part of the family, and they also make good guard dogs as they are protective towards their families and home. Airedales are not aggressive towards other dogs but will tend to stand their ground if another dog challenges them but are good with other household pets. They are also dominant and stubborn dogs but sensitive so good training, which should be reward based is essential. As Airedales were originally breed for active work they require a lot of exercise with some time spent playing games to use their intelligence but because hip dysplasia does occur in this breed it is important that you restrict exercise until your dog is one year old. Health wise Airedales are hardy breeds but do suffer from skin infections, eye problems, hip dysplasia and older dogs may develop tumours. Average lifespan is 10-14 years. | |||||||||||||
